ON SET - DOUBLE NEGATIVE
Go behind the scenes on the set of the Timeless campaign shoot for DOUBLE NEGATIVE in Brooklyn, NY.
Just like the clothes I make, my campaign shoots are personal. For this campaign, I teamed up with my dear friend Adam Nordby to shoot Double Negative. Our personal relationship made this shoot so special and I’m so grateful that each stage of the process of making clothes and the storytelling behind them involves deeply personal relationships.
When developing the concept for this campaign, I wanted to highlight the stark contrast between the black and white pieces I was introducing into my collection. The concept was inspired by Michael Heizer’s Double Negative land artwork in Nevada, where subtraction is the act of art making. The void is the art. But, it is also a revealing of what is below, providing order to an unseen landscape.
I became interested in the idea of the negative in photography, the inverse of what something is. With my black and white garments, I realized that a negative image of them just creates an image of one garment’s counterpart. For example, the negative of my white canvas pants creates an image of my black canvas pants. So what happens when you layer negatives on top of each other? The result of the campaign is an illegibility between what is a black garment and what is white. Black is white, white is black.
