ON SET - MUTATIONS BENEATH THE SKIN
Go behind the scenes on the set of the Timeless campaign shoot for MUTATIONS BENEATH THE SKIN in Los Angeles, CA.
What I love about Alaric Ma’s work is how he examines contemporary image making and the culture around images in our society, which is so over-saturated and individualistic. Alaric reached out to me a year prior shooting our campaign and pitched the idea of working together. What was special about working with Alaric wasn’t just his talent behind the camera, but the fact that we share the same high school alma mater, a small school in Illinois where the arts and creativity were not seriously promoted or considered. He and I were the outliers, both quietly pursuing our creative practice despite being several years apart.
When it came time to concepting our campaign, we landed on this idea that clothing is a site of transformation. We asked questions such as, how does my clothing relate to the body? What is the intimacy in my collection? What is an image, a surface, a garment, a facade? We started to think about clothing as skin and what my clothing represents with this new understanding. The alchemical dye finishes on the surface of my garments represent change, or what we considered a mutation that occurs to the fabric/skin. Motifs of twisting, contorting, and pulling/stretching the body became a language to visualize the tension between industry, human, and landscape.
